General Purpose Swabbing Kit for Collection of Firearms and Explosive Residue

General Purpose Explosives/Firearms Residue Swabbing Kit

There may be many surfaces that require swabbing for the presence of firearms and explosives residue.

swabbing a bullet hole in a window pane

These include sampling of alleged firing points such as: car interiors and around window frames, suspected bullet holes and strike marks, suspected weapon or explosives hides and dwellings. For these cases, the FSNI General Purpose Swabbing Kit is used for the collection of samples.

The kit is divided into three compartments within a nylon outer bag and contains all the necessary components and materials to ensure an efficient recovery of residues from the surface under test. The first compartment contains detailed instructions, a medi wipe and a ball point pen. The second section contains a disposable overall and pair of gloves to be worn by the sampling officer. The third section contains the sampling materials in a rigid plastic container with spare security lid and other packaging materials for re-submission.

Instructions included with the kit describe the procedure to be followed for sampling in each of the many different situations. By following these notes, an operator can reliably sample any given area for the presence of firearms and explosives residue. The swabs contained in the kit are made from a piece of acrilan fibre, moistened with a solvent (isopropanol) and contained in a polythene lined foil sachet. This is torn open and, while wearing gloves, is firmly rubbed over the surface to be tested and then placed into a capped plastic tube. After sampling all of the areas in the case under investigation, the swabs are packaged in the security sealed container and returned to the laboratory for analysis.
